Anuyogadvāra‑sūtram (Part I) – Book Review

Summary
This review evaluates the edition of the *Anuyogadvāra‑sūtra* (Part I) edited by Muni Jambūvijaya. The text, originally compiled by Munirāja Puṇyavijayaji and accompanied by commentaries from Jinadāsa Gaṇi Mahattarā’s *Cūrṇi*, Haribhadra Sūri’s *Vṛtti* and Maladharī Hemacandra Sūri’s *Vṛtti*, has been critically re‑edited and published as part of the Jaina Āgama Series (No. 18[1], 1999). The reviewer notes that the new edition uses high‑quality, soothing paper and bold type; it reproduces the original text followed by three varieties of commentary and includes a long Gujarati introduction and five appendices. The readings have been checked meticulously; however, the reviewer points out a few questionable choices (such as printing *taṃjahā* separately rather than as the compound *taṃjahā* and inconsistent use of cerebral *ṇ* versus dental *n*). These minor issues aside, the edition is considered more reliable than earlier ones. The reviewer congratulates Muni Jambūvijaya for his scholarship and editorial discipline and believes the work will be welcomed by scholars.

The critical edition of the *Anuyogadvāra‑sūtra* reviewed here sets a new benchmark for reliability and editorial care. While a few orthographic decisions could have been standardised, the edition’s clear layout, comprehensive apparatus and scholarly introduction make it an important resource for researchers of Jain canonical texts.
