Summary

Chapter 2 synthesises astronomical references from the Ṛgveda and later Vedic texts to infer the age of the Ṛgveda. The author notes that scholars have used observations of the Pleiades (Kṛttikā) rising exactly in the east and descriptions of solstices to argue that parts of the Ṛgveda may date to around 4000–2500 B.C. Tilak and Jacobi interpreted hymns alluding to the position of the Pleiades and other stars to support an early antiquity, while Keith and other critics argued that the evidence is ambiguousfile:///home/oai/share/563036_compressed-113-293.pdf. The chapter reviews arguments based on ritual calendars in the Śrauta and Gṛhya Sūtras, discusses the precession of the equinoxes and assesses the reliability of the astronomical data. It concludes that while astronomical evidence can suggest broad chronological ranges, it cannot fix an exact date for the Ṛgveda, leaving its age uncertain within a wide span.

Conclusion

The examination of astronomical references reveals that proposed dates for the Ṛgveda depend heavily on how one interprets poetic imagery and ritual calendrics. Although the evidence suggests that some hymns may be very ancient, the chapter cautions against drawing overly precise conclusions and highlights the need for interdisciplinary approaches to Vedic chronology.
