Restoration of the Original Language of Ardhamagadhi Texts by Dr. K. R. Chandra Reviewer: Mikal Austin Radford Key Points: i) The work is a methodological milestone in Jain textual linguistics. ii) Ardhamagadhi, the language of early Jain scriptures, has undergone extensive distortion over centuries through recitation, copying, and regional influences. iii) Dr. Chandra argues for the recovery of the original idiom using statistical and comparative analysis of manuscripts, especially using ten test words for case study analysis. iv) Influences from Ashokan dialects, Pali, and Maharashtri Prakrit have altered canonical texts. v) Lack of early grammars (Vararuci, Canda, Hemacandra came much later) meant loss of linguistic integrity. vi) The study offers a model for re-editing Jain canonical literature in its earliest possible linguistic form . 2) Vaddamanu Excavations: 1981–85 by T.V.G. Sastri et al. Highlights: i) This archaeological report documents Jain and Buddhist remains from a site in Andhra Pradesh dated between 300 BCE and 450 CE. ii) Major findings include stupas, viharas, Brahmi inscriptions, pottery, coins, and inscribed potsherds. iii) Jain motifs and references to Vardhaman (Mahavira) suggest that the site was an important Jain center, possibly linked to Chandragupta Maurya's era. iv) Coins of Sada and Ikshvaku dynasties help construct a revised chronology of South Indian dynasties. v) Criticism: Lack of osteological/biodata analysis (skeletal remains were noted but not studied). vi) Despite this, the report is a valuable contribution to understanding Jainism's spread in South India.
