A new Source of the Political History of Kamarupa

Summary

This article introduces and analyses the Haragaurisamvada, an Assamese‑script bark manuscript recently discovered in Faridpur. The text belongs to a class of Tantras that combine geography with political history and provides a narrative of India with particular focus on Kamarupa (Assam). The author outlines the manuscript’s physical characteristics, its incomplete state and its relation to another copy described in the Descriptive Catalogue of Assamese Manuscripts. The Haragaurisamvada contains chapters on the creation of the world, the geography of Bharatavarsa and a chronicle of Kamarupa’s rulers. Kings are listed with names rather than mere initials, and occasional Saka‑era dates are given. The narrative begins with mythical figures like Naraka and Bhagadatta, passes through Dharmapala and his descendants, and touches upon historical dynasties including the Saifunagas, Nandas, Guptas and later Koch and Ahom rulers. Brief episodes mention invasions from Gauda and Mathura, succession disputes, treaties and battles. Although many genealogical links and dates appear fanciful, comparisons with other sources such as the Burajis and Harsacarita reveal that some details align with known events. The article argues that, despite its legendary tone, the Haragaurisamvada preserves local traditions about Kamarupa’s history that merit attention from historians of Assam.
