Astronomical Instruments of the Hindus

Summary

Drawing on Sanskrit treatises and historical observations, this article catalogues the principal instruments used by Indian astronomers from antiquity through the medieval period. It begins with the simplest device, the śaṅku or gnomon, a vertical stick whose shadow length allowed Brahmagupta and Bhāskara to calculate the Sun’s altitude and local noon. Moving to more elaborate instruments, the author describes the armillary sphere (gola‑yantra) consisting of concentric rings representing the celestial equator and ecliptic; such devices were used to teach cosmology and to determine declination. The article explains the cross‑staff (yantra‑rāja) and the triśaṅku‑yantra, which enabled observers to measure angular distances between stars. Water clocks (ghaṭikā yantra) and clepsydras are discussed as time‑keeping devices in Vedic rituals and temple astronomy. A substantial portion is devoted to the large masonry instruments commissioned by Maharaja Jai Singh II in the eighteenth century, such as the Samrāt Yantra (an enormous sundial), the Jai Prakash (hemispherical cavities used to measure celestial altitudes) and the Rama Yantra (cylindrical structures for zenith distance). The author emphasizes that these Jaipur observatories represent a culmination of Indian observational astronomy, combining traditional designs with insights gleaned from Islamic and European sources. Attention is also given to textual references: the Śulba Sūtras mention simple rods and chords for geometric constructions, while later works like the Siddhānta Śiromaṇi describe quadrants and sextants. The article compares these instruments with Greco‑Roman devices, noting independent developments as well as cross‑cultural exchanges through Arab intermediaries. It also touches upon the social context: instruments were crafted by skilled artisans, sponsored by rulers, and installed at temple complexes or royal courts where astronomers forecast eclipses and prepared almanacs. The narrative concludes by stressing the need to preserve extant instruments and encourages modern historians of science to reconstruct them using surviving diagrams and mathematical descriptions.

Conclusion

The survey demonstrates that Indian astronomers possessed a diverse array of mechanical and architectural tools that enabled accurate astronomical observations long before the advent of telescopes. These instruments, ranging from portable gnomons to monumental masonry structures, testify to the ingenuity and precision of Hindu observational astronomy and its engagement with broader scientific traditions.
