Summary

This paper examines references to metals and metalworking in ancient India and traces the development of metallurgical techniques. It begins with the Rigvedic term ‘ayas’, which denotes metal and may refer to copper or iron. Archaeological evidence suggests that iron working in India may have begun as early as 1800 BCE, though large‑scale production is securely attested by about 600 BCE. The article notes that the Arthashastra sets out the duties of directors of metals and mining, indicating state involvement in metallurgy. It describes the invention of high‑carbon ‘wootz’ steel through the crucible process by around the second century CE and explains how this steel was exported widely. The author also cites historical accounts praising Indian iron and steel, including the Delhi iron pillar and references to Indian steel in foreign sources. By the Gupta era, India was highly advanced in industrial chemistry, producing dyes, glass and alloys, and European travellers later marvelled at the quality of Indian steel. The paper contextualises these achievements within wider developments in ancient science and technology.
