Medieval Tamil Nadu constructed extensive tanks like the Panamalai (700 AD) and Gangaikonda Cholapuram (25 km embankment), comparable to modern dams. Traditional maintenance involved community participation, with revenue-free lands allocated for upkeep. However, British colonial policies disrupted these systems by prioritizing land revenue over water infrastructure, leading to neglect. Post-independence, urbanization and encroachment further degraded tanks, which are now perceived as low-priority water sources. Chennai exemplifies this decline: the Long Tank (6 km) and Vyasarpadi Tank were destroyed for housing projects like Mambalam Scheme (1930) and Vyasarpadi Housing Board initiatives. The Spur Tank, once vital for Egmore, was encroached by institutions like the T.B. Dispensary. These losses reflect broader challenges in preserving traditional water systems amid rapid urbanization.
