Jaina Bibliography

By Amulya Charan Ghosh Vidyabhusan

Vol. 13 · No. 2Oct - 1978pp. 84-86English

Summary

The ‘Jaina Bibliography’ printed in this issue is a reprint of an alphabetical bibliography compiled by the late Amulya Charan Ghosh Vidyabhusan in 1910 and first published in the Bengali journal Bāṇī. The editor explains that the list is reproduced for readers’ benefit. The bibliography is arranged alphabetically rather than by subject and begins with works starting with the letter ‘A’, such as ‘Adhar Pāpasthānakni Sajã’ (Ahmedabad, 1867), ‘Arihant Stuti Saṃgraha’ (Bombay, 1872), and ‘Ātmāramjī Anandvijayjī’s Jain Tattvādars’ (Ahmedabad, 1899). It continues through titles like ‘Bārah Vratni Tīp,’ ‘Gañhulī Saṃgrah,’ and ‘Hemcandra’s Śrī Triṣaṣṭiśalākāpuruṣacaritra,’ giving publication details and, where relevant, multiple editions or translations. The second and third pages of the bibliography (printed pages 85–86) list secondary sources in European languages. For example, it cites B.C. Allen’s ‘Assam District Gazetteers,’ reports of the Archaeological Survey of India, numerous articles by the Italian scholar Angelo Ballini on the Upamitabhavaprañca Kathā of Siddharṣi, and works by R.D. Banerji, L.D. Barnett and J.F. Fleet. Later entries include Francis and Hemingway’s ‘Madras District Gazetteers,’ Rajendralal Mitra’s ‘Vestiges of the Kings of Gwalior,’ and V.A. Smith’s ‘The Early History of India.’ By bringing together both Indian and Western publications, the bibliography provides historians with a handy reference to early studies of Jainism, its literature, and its art. Although concise, it reflects the breadth of scholarly interest in Jain topics in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Conclusion

This reprinted bibliography gathers early printed works and scholarly studies on Jainism from both Indian and European sources. Its alphabetical arrangement provides researchers with a succinct reference for tracing foundational texts and research on Jain history and culture.
