मर्यादाविहीनता के उजाड़

Vol. 53 · No. 02February - 2005pp. 16-18Hindi

Summary

The United Nations Development Programme’s Human Development Index measures happiness based on individual prosperity but does not assess the level of values. These indices do not clarify how disciplined or restrained a person is in life. Whenever a person transgresses boundaries, they inevitably suffer in some form. A person’s own values and cultural values form the basis of their happiness. Conduct is determined by values, while disregard for values indicates a lapse in behavior. Restraint is a significant value; breaking it represents a deep moral failure. Health, education, and income are considered in happiness indices, but humanity and humaneness are not included. The current ruling class and intellectual society have become completely disconnected from principles in their actions, behavior, and life processes. Similarly, ideological theorists have created such distances that they cannot tolerate each other’s ideologies, importance, or achievements. Discipline based on principles is becoming unhinged. Previously, capital of good deeds accumulated in line with thought and principles, and social prestige was established on that capital, around which politics centered. Now, the capital of so-called politics is everything, and arguments are made to justify and legitimize it. The most concerning thing is that the intellectual class and ultimately the common people fall prey to such arguments, strengthening political dominance. The distance between the doer, action, and deed in the world of principles is increasing. The main reason for the current lapse of the intellectual or ruling class is the disregard for boundaries. Generally, they fail to implement principles in practice. The chances of anyone paying attention to the unhinging of action and behavior seem very slim. In such a situation, one can imagine the state of society. So-called modernity and high individual aspirations are becoming today’s lifestyle. This lifestyle has made individuals indifferent to family and society. This lifestyle, unlimited aspirations, parents’ indifference towards their children, and increasing arbitrariness in society have increased carelessness towards values, ethics, and self-discipline among adolescent boys and girls. Obscene acts in school farewell programs have sounded a warning bell. The main reason for this is also a lack of boundaries

Conclusion

The document underscores that current happiness indices, like the UN's Human Development Index, fail to measure individual discipline, adherence to values, and ethical conduct, focusing instead on material prosperity. This omission has profound implications, as the text argues that the erosion of moral boundaries (maryada) is the root cause of widespread societal distress, from youth indiscipline and family breakdowns to environmental degradation and political corruption. The outcome is a society where personal and professional conduct is unmoored from principles, leading to increased anxiety, depression, and a loss of genuine well-being. Ultimately, the analysis concludes that sustainable happiness and social health cannot be achieved through economic metrics alone; they require a conscious restoration of value-based discipline and a reintegration of ethical frameworks into both personal life and public policy.
