Syadvada in the View of Three Modern Scientists

Summary

Syādvāda, or the doctrine of conditioned predication, is the Jaina theory of pluralistic realism and relativity. The article explains that, unlike absolute judgments that claim exclusive truth, syādvāda holds that judgments are conditional; statements are true only in relation to specific circumstances, time and viewpoint. Mahāvīra encouraged disciples to refrain from dogmatism, emphasising that any proposition can be affirmed, denied or both depending on the context. This approach is grounded in the broader principle of anekāntavāda (non‑one‑sidedness), which accepts that reality is manifold and no single viewpoint can capture it entirely. The author illustrates this principle through the perspective of three modern scientists. Physicist D. S. Kothari uses the example of the atom, which in different experiments behaves like both a particle and a wave. Rather than seeing these descriptions as contradictory, modern physics accepts them as complementary, analogous to the syādvāda view that apparently opposite predicates can both be true from different standpoints. Niels Bohr’s principle of complementarity likewise mirrors Jaina logic: a subatomic entity cannot be described fully without considering mutually exclusive experimental arrangements. Another scientist discusses how the uncertainty principle implies that measurement disturbs the system, supporting syādvāda’s insistence that knowledge is relative to the observer and method of observation. In Jaina epistemology, any object possesses infinite attributes, and a statement about one attribute does not deny the existence of others. The sevenfold predication (saptabhaṅgī) — “maybe it is,” “maybe it is not,” “maybe it is and it is not,” and so on — expresses this complexity. The article highlights that syādvāda is not merely a logical doctrine but has ethical implications: it fosters tolerance and intellectual humility by recognising that others may hold valid perspectives.
