ANYAYOGAVYAVACCHEDIKA A STUDY by Yajoeshwar S Shastri It is an old Indian tradition to present philosophical thoughts through poetic media Ancient thinkers thought that different philosophical doctri nes 80 be made popular through this media The method of writing small treatises say containing twenty to thirty verses 15 adopted by great philosophical thinkers Vasubandhu wrote Viméikd and Trinika to propagate Vijadnavdda for the first time In the history of Jainism this kind of method 15 adopted by Siddhasena Divakara who composed Dva trisad dvatrimsika Acarya Haribhadra has also written Vimsati viméiks Acarya Hemacandra a versatile genius following the foot steps of Siddhasena composed two sets of thirty two stanzas known થડ ह gavyavacchedika and Ayogavyavacchedika Both the works ate very impor tant from the point of view of Jaina philosophy though small in ड ट But Anyayogavyavacchediké occupies unique place among the Jaina philosophical literature on account of its high merits This work is a genuine devotional lyric pulsating with reverence for the master ie Mahavira and is at the same time a review of some of the tenets of the rival schools on which the Jaina sees reason 10 differ Devotlon and philosophical thoughts are nicely blended together in one whole The book deals with wide range of philosophical topics Each verse 1 pregnant with significant meanings Mallisena has explored the significance of each verse in his Syddvidamaijari a commentary on Adnya yogavyavacchedika In this work Hemacandra critically evaluates some of the fundamental principles of Nyaya vaifesika Sankhya yoga Vedaota Buddhism and Materialism and establishes his own view of drekantfavada many sidedness of Reality It is important 10 note that Hemacandra does not examine tenets of rival systems in its entirety but selects 50100૯ एव the tenets for criticism which are greatest problems of Religion and philosophy such થડ problems of universal and particular the permanent and chanpe God the 5૦૫ the nature of reality and 50 00 He evalutes Nyaya VaiSesika principles in seven verses MIrhamsa in two 10 two Vedanta Sankhya in one Buddhism 10 four and C rvaka in one He devoted nine verses 10 establish his own theory of Anckantavida It is noteworthy that though he passes certain sarc stic comments on other systems nowhere doeshe make any irrespounsible criticism 9 It 15 not possible 10 give detailed evaluation of other systems of thou ght made by Hemacaadra in this small essay But an attempt
