Varāhamihira’s Bṛhat‑Samhitā and the Sukranīti set out observations on hydrology, noting that rivers carry ten times more water at the mouth than at the source and that the character of soil changes over thousands of years. Jain works and the Arthaśāstra discuss mines, minerals, rocks and the suitability of land for agriculture or settlement, indicating practical geological knowledge. The article argues that ancient Indians recognised geomorphic processes such as erosion, sedimentation and uplift, though they expressed these in mythological or cosmological idioms—comparing the earth to a tortoise or snake supporting mountains. By collating references across genres, the author shows that geomorphological concepts permeated religious texts, scientific treatises and political manuals, reflecting both abstract cosmology and empirical observation. The study concludes that pre‑modern India possessed a nuanced, if non‑systematic, appreciation of geomorphology that informed agriculture, city planning, irrigation and religious symbolism.
