Glimpses of Political History from the Natya Sastra of Bharata

Summary

Mining the Nāṭyaśāstra for historical data, this article argues that the ancient treatise on dramaturgy contains valuable political and ethnographic information. Though primarily concerned with theatre, the text refers to various peoples and regions—Sakas, Yavanas, Pahlavas, Kambojas, Andhras—and to states like Kosala, Magadha and Madhura. Such references imply a historical milieu in which foreign groups had entered the subcontinent and regional powers competed for prominence. The treatise’s prescriptions on language and dialect distinguish between Prācyā (eastern), Madhyama (middle) and Avanti speech, providing clues to linguistic geography. A passage likening the boundaries of Aryavarta to those of the Nanda or early Maurya empire helps situate the composition chronologically after these dynasties. Discussions of costume, ornament and musical instruments reflect material culture that can be correlated with archaeological evidence. The author contends that the Nāṭyaśāstra’s incidental references illuminate political structures, trade contacts and social hierarchy during the early classical period, likely between the second century BCE and second century CE. While acknowledging that it is not a historical chronicle, the essay shows that careful reading of its cultural prescriptions yields insights into the political landscape and the integration of foreign and indigenous elements in Indian society.
