The practice dates back to 600 A.D. and has persisted in Tamil Nadu, with examples dating from the time of Tolkappium to the 16th century. A rectangular hero stone was discovered in Keezhvanakkambodi, Chengam Taluk, Tiruvannamalai district, during a survey of sacred groves. The stone features a warrior wielding a sword and shield, with a female figure nearby. Stylistically, it is dated to the 16th or 17th century, possibly linked to the Nayaks of Gingee, whose period saw a prevalence of such stones in the region. A smaller stone with two female figures, possibly a sati stone, was also found nearby. Together, they are worshipped as Ammaccharu, a deity believed to protect against evil spirits. An annual festival involves animal sacrifices. The stones are associated with a sacred grove, highlighting their role in local conservation practices.
