HEALING THE HILLS (Jan )

By Swami Dhyanasthananda

Vol. 1Jan 2017English

Summary

The 2013 Uttarakhand floods devastated the Himalayan region, destroying villages, displacing thousands, and causing widespread suffering. Swami Dhyanasthananda of the Ramakrishna Mission Devashrama, Dehradun, recounts the relief efforts led by his team in the aftermath. Eight days after the disaster, the team surveyed affected areas, facing extreme challenges like inaccessible terrain, harsh weather, and disrupted communication. Villages such as Pulana and Bhunder were completely destroyed, leaving survivors in overcrowded, unsanitary relief camps with inadequate supplies. In Joshimath, the team established a base camp, coordinating with the Indian Army to assist stranded pilgrims and distribute relief materials. However, logistical hurdles, opportunistic behavior, and poor planning hindered efforts. Attempts to reach remote areas like Neeti were hampered by landslides and transportation issues, stranding the team temporarily. Despite obstacles, the team successfully delivered essential supplies to isolated villages, overcoming skepticism and cultural hesitations. The experience highlighted the resilience and simplicity of local communities, as well as the challenges of disaster response in remote regions. The account underscores the importance of preparedness and collective compassion in times of crisis.

Conclusion

The Uttarakhand disaster laid bare the fragility of human existence and the critical need for proactive disaster management. The Ramakrishna Mission’s relief efforts revealed both the resilience of local communities and the systemic challenges in emergency response, including logistical hurdles, opportunistic exploitation, and the psychological toll on survivors. The crisis underscored the importance of preparedness, coordinated action, and maintaining human dignity amid chaos. For the affected regions, recovery will require not only rebuilding infrastructure but also restoring faith in collective resilience and ethical solidarity.
