REMINISCENCES OF SARGACHHI (Jun )

By Swami Suhitananda

Vol. 6Jun 2017English

Summary

Swami Suhitananda (1884–1967), a disciple of Holy Mother Sri Sarada Devi, served at Ramakrishna Mission Ashrama, Sargachhi, as monastic-in-charge and later as a retired sannyasi. His teachings inspired many to embrace monastic life and spirituality. These reminiscences, originally in Bengali (*Sargachhir Smriti*), were translated into English by Sri Shoutir Kishore Chatterjee. Swami Premeshananda emphasized *shraddha* (faith) and *nishtha* (single-minded devotion), noting that while orthodoxy in other traditions was overt, *nishtha* in modern times should remain internal for devotion to mature. He discouraged celebrating birthdays for gurus, comparing it to the Vaishnavas' excessive rituals. Discussing Sri Ramakrishna, he highlighted his unparalleled ability to reshape minds, balancing knowledge, work, devotion, and meditation. He also contrasted Sri Ramakrishna’s miracles with Buddha’s influence, which he believed evolved into Christianity. On spiritual progress, Maharaj stressed self-assessment over judging others, using examples like a brahmachari’s compassion for a dog and practical lessons in maintaining cleanliness. He explained the Bhagavad Gita’s verse on divine attributes, cautioning against intellectualism without practice. He also discussed the challenges of spiritual growth, noting Holy Mother’s initiations often led to unfulfilled potential, as seen in a Brahmin who later desired marriage. Maharaj differentiated *sattva*, *rajas*, and *tamas* gunas, suggesting testing through beauty or music to identify one’s dominant nature. He advised prioritizing meditation, scripture, and spiritual study after initial years of hard work to avoid later-life struggles. The discourse concluded with a call to balance action and introspection, warning against the pitfalls of intellectualism and unchecked desire.

Conclusion

Swami Premeshananda’s teachings at Sargachhi underscore the transformative power of shraddha, nishtha, and selfless service, offering timeless insights into spiritual progress. His emphasis on self-awareness over judgment, practical spirituality, and the balance between action and meditation highlights the Ramakrishna order’s enduring relevance. By exemplifying detachment, selflessness, and the unity of all existence, he inspired generations to transcend intellectual barriers and embrace divine love. These reminiscences serve as a bridge between Sri Ramakrishna’s ideals and contemporary seekers, emphasizing that true spiritual growth lies in harmonizing knowledge, work, devotion, and meditation—a legacy that continues to guide and elevate souls toward liberation.
