DIMENSIONS OF REALITIES (Nov )

By Swami Sunirmalananda

Vol. 11Nov 2017English

Summary

The article explores the evolving technological realities of Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and the Internet of Things (IoT), framing them as interconnected layers of a simulated universe. VR, a fully technological creation, offers a simulated experience, while AR enhances real-world interactions by blending virtual and physical elements. IoT connects all objects to the internet, enabling seamless, automated environments. The author suggests that future advancements will further integrate these technologies, creating immersive experiences indistinguishable from reality. The article also delves into philosophical perspectives on reality, drawing from Vedanta and other traditions. It distinguishes between *Vyavaharika Satta* (the perceived waking world), *Pratibhasika Satta* (the illusory dream world), and *Paramarthika Satta* (the absolute, unchanging reality). Vedanta posits that the waking world, though seemingly solid, is transient and mind-dependent, much like dreams. The author warns against conflating technological illusions with true reality, urging awareness and discernment. The Uddhava Gita is cited to emphasize focusing on the eternal and real amid transient appearances. Ultimately, the article calls for vigilance in navigating both technological and metaphysical realities, advocating for wisdom to distinguish the real from the illusory.

Conclusion

The rapid evolution of VR, AR, and IoT has created layered realities, blurring the lines between the physical and digital worlds. While these technologies enhance convenience and efficiency, they also raise profound philosophical questions about the nature of existence. Vedanta and ancient Indian thought remind us that all perceived realities—whether waking, dreaming, or technologically mediated—are ultimately illusory (*pratibhasika satta*). The Uddhava Gita’s timeless wisdom urges us to transcend these transient constructs and awaken to the only true reality (*paramarthika satta*). As we become increasingly entangled in the "net of everything," the challenge lies in recognizing the impermanence and unreality of these systems. True liberation comes from understanding that the digital labyrinth, no matter how immersive, remains a creation of the mind.
