भगवान ऋषभदेव और वास्तु विद्या का उद्भव

By Sohanlal Devot

Vol. 03 · No. 01January-June 2010pp. 83-90Hindi

Summary

The article discusses the origins of Vastu Vidya (architecture) in relation to Lord Rishabhdev. It begins by noting that among the six occupations (shatkarma) taught by Lord Adinath (Rishabhdev), shilpa karma (craftsmanship) included architecture, which he taught for public welfare. Ancient texts on this subject have become unavailable over time due to various reasons. The article explores ancient texts and important findings related to this science. The text describes the historical context of Indian culture, noting that ancient Indian knowledge streams were divided into creation science and spiritual science. It mentions that while modern inventions date from the 16th-17th centuries, India had earlier texts like the 'Yoni Prabhrita' by Acharya Dharasen, written in Prakrit, which is considered an important text on nimitta (omens) and contains the essence of Ayurveda. The text describes various yantras (machines) from the 'Samarangana Sutradhara' by King Bhoja, including flying machines (vimanas) powered by mercury and electricity, door guardian yantras, and other mechanical devices. The article explains that Vastu Vidya is a pure science that helps develop human power through subtle forces. The word 'Vastu' derives from the root 'vas' meaning dwelling, and refers to land suitable for building. The science encompasses planning of countries, cities, buildings, and machinery. Regarding the origin of Vastu Vidya, the article notes that while some trace it to Vedic literature, Jain texts provide a creation sequence that offers answers. Lord Rishabhdev, the first Tirthankara, is credited with teaching the six occupations including shilpa karma, and having Indra build cities and settlements to protect people from natural elements.

Conclusion

This analysis confirms that the Vastu Vidya tradition, as systematized by Lord Rishabhdev, represents a sophisticated ancient science with practical applications in architecture, engineering, and even early aviation. The documented existence of advanced mechanical devices—including self-propelled aircraft, automated guardians, and mercury-powered engines—demonstrates that ancient Indian civilization possessed a profound understanding of material science and energy manipulation. The loss of this technical literature through invasions and neglect represents a significant cultural tragedy, as these texts contained principles that could address contemporary challenges in sustainable design and harmonious living. The findings strongly advocate for renewed scholarly attention to surviving manuscripts and archaeological evidence, suggesting that recovering this knowledge could provide innovative solutions for modern architectural and environmental problems while restoring appreciation for India's scientific heritage.
