How Karma Theory Relates to Modern Science

By Duli Chandra Jain

Vol. XVI · No. 3Jan - 1982pp. 104-118English

Summary

In this long essay Duli Chandra Jain seeks to demonstrate that the Jain theory of karma, though formulated millennia before the advent of modern science, aligns with several contemporary scientific concepts and can even illuminate them. The author begins by outlining the basic premises of Jain karma doctrine. Every soul (jīva) is inherently pure but becomes bound by material karma particles attracted through thought, speech and bodily actions. The bondage is determined by four parameters—nature (prakṛti), duration (sthiti), intensity (anubhāga) and space points (pradeśa)—and karmas are classified into eight main categories. Of these, four ghātin karmas obscure the soul’s essential attributes (omniscience, omnipotence, bliss and longevity) while four aghātin karmas influence bodily existence without affecting omniscience. Liberation involves preventing further influx of karma (saṃvara) and shedding existing karmas (nirjarā) through ethical discipline, austerity and meditation. When all karmas are destroyed, the soul rises to the apex of the universe and attains siddhahood. Jain then compares this framework to concepts in physics, biology and psychology. He likens the action of karma particles to subatomic particles or energy quanta that interact with matter; the moral law “as you sow, so you reap” parallels the Newtonian principle that every action has a reaction. The conservation and transformation of karma resemble the law of conservation of energy. In biology, the way karma stores information about past thoughts and deeds is compared to the genetic code written in nucleic acids. Just as sequences of nucleotides in DNA record and transmit hereditary information, the author suggests that the prakṛti and sthiti of karmas encode psychological and physical dispositions which can be modified through thought‑control and ethical conduct. He also draws parallels between the process of karma fruition and endocrine feedback mechanisms: both involve the activation of latent potential by external or internal stimuli. Further comparisons are made to cybernetics and computer science; modern computers store information in binary code, and modifications in memory correspond to the transformation of karma through right knowledge and penance. By noting these analogies, Jain argues that the karma doctrine is not a mythological relic but a sophisticated model of causality, feedback and information processing. In his conclusion he calls for collaborative research between Jain scholars and scientists to explore how insights from karma theory might inform fields such as genetics, neurology and behavioural science. He cautions, however, that no scientific experiment has yet verified karma’s existence, and thus its acceptance remains a matter of faith and philosophical reasoning. Nonetheless, the parallels he outlines encourage a dialogue between ancient Indian philosophy and modern scientific thought.

Conclusion

Duli Chandra Jain’s essay positions the Jain karma theory as an early, holistic model of cause and effect that resonates with principles in physics, biology and information science. By interpreting karmic particles as carriers of encoded information analogous to genes or computer bits, he suggests that mental discipline and ethical conduct can literally reprogram the soul’s destiny. While acknowledging that karma cannot be empirically tested, he asserts that its conceptual consonance with modern science invites both communities to engage in mutual exploration. The piece thus bridges ancient metaphysics and contemporary scientific inquiry and encourages interdisciplinary dialogue.
