Vol. 24 · No. 0March - 2010pp. 10-17Hindi

Summary

This document provides a detailed overview of the life and works of Ācārya Prabhācandra, a highly respected scholar in the fields of Jain logic (Nyāya) and grammar. He is traditionally associated with the city of Dhārā (modern-day Dhar in Madhya Pradesh) and was honored by the renowned King Bhoja, who ruled in the 10th century. The text notes a scholarly debate regarding his status, as he is referred to as a "Paṇḍita," a term typically used for a householder scholar, which seems to contradict the lifestyle of a Digambara monk who would not reside permanently in one place. His time period is generally accepted to be between the 9th and 11th centuries CE, with specific estimates placing him from 950 to 1065 CE. Ācārya Prabhācandra was a prolific author whose works span the four traditional divisions of Jain literature (anuyogas). His writings include original compositions and extensive commentaries. Among his most significant works is the *Prameyakamalamārtaṇḍa*, a massive commentary on his teacher Ācārya Māṇikyanaṇdi’s *Parīkṣāmukha-sūtra*. This text is considered a foundational work in Jain logic, systematically refuting the positions of other philosophical schools like the Nyāya, Vaiśeṣika, Sāṃkhya, Mīmāṃsā, Buddhist, and Cārvāka, while establishing the Jain doctrine of *syādvāda*. Another major original work is the *Nyāyakumudacandra*, which is praised for clarifying complex points of logic. His grammatical expertise is evident in the *Śabdāmbhoja Bhāskara*, a commentary on the *Jainendra Vyākaraṇa*. He also wrote important commentaries on key spiritual texts, including the *Samayasāra*, *Pravacanasāra*, and *Pañcāst

Conclusion

This analysis confirms that Ācārya Prabhācandra was not merely a commentator but a pivotal intellectual force who synthesized Jain logic, grammar, and spirituality into a cohesive system. His works, particularly the *Prameyakamalamārtaṇḍa* and *Nyāyakumudacandra*, established a rigorous framework that compelled rival philosophers to engage with and sometimes adopt *syādvāda*. The implication is that his scholarship elevated Jain epistemology to a dominant position in medieval Indian philosophical debates, effectively countering Buddhist and Brahmanical critiques. His dual identity as a householder-paṇḍita and a deeply spiritual commentator on texts like the *Samayasāra* demonstrates that rigorous intellectual pursuit and spiritual practice were not mutually exclusive in the Jain tradition. Ultimately, his legacy lies in proving that Jain logic could withstand the most sophisticated philosophical scrutiny, thereby securing its continued relevance and authority in the broader Indian intellectual landscape.
