Summary

A young girl named Dhriti is asked by her teacher to write an essay titled "My Grandmother." Dhriti is unable to complete the assignment because she does not have a grandmother. Her teacher, understanding the situation, suggests she write an essay titled "My Auntie" instead. Dhriti feels a deep longing for a grandmother, especially after hearing her friend Vaishali talk about her own grandmothers and great-grandmother. Dhriti naively decides she will buy a grandmother and searches for advertisements in newspapers, but finds none. One day, while walking to Vaishali's house, Dhriti accidentally bumps into an old woman, causing the old woman's bag of rice flour to spill. The old woman is kind and forgiving. Later, Dhriti sees the same old woman injured on the road after being knocked down by running bulls. Dhriti rushes to help her, brings her home, and her parents call a doctor. The doctor takes the old woman to his clinic. Dhriti writes her essay about the old woman. Months later, during school holidays, Dhriti sees the old woman walking with a stick. She brings her home. The old woman thanks Dhriti's family for their help and asks Dhriti what she wants as a gift. Dhriti asks if she will be her grandmother. The old woman, who is alone in the world, happily agrees. Dhriti's mother says the old woman will live with them, and Dhriti is overjoyed to have found her grandmother.
