Summary

A soldier returns home from war, but his family reunion is not the joyful event his son, Rohon, had imagined. Rohon’s father, a military officer, is distant and lost in thought, and his mother is tense. The next morning, Rohon finds his father sitting alone on the lawn. His father begins to speak, not to Rohon directly, but as if recounting a memory. He describes a young, brave lieutenant who had just joined his unit straight from the academy. The two were sent on a dangerous mission together. During a sudden enemy attack, the young lieutenant saved Rohon’s father’s life by charging at an enemy soldier, but was himself shot and killed. Rohon’s father is haunted by this loss. He explains that he visited the lieutenant’s elderly, devastated parents and his disabled brother, who clung to him for comfort.
