Summary
A father, Devisharan, has a chronically ill daughter whom no one will marry. He devises a scheme to trap a virtuous, celibate scholar named Kalpak. Devisharan digs a well in his courtyard. When Kalpak comes begging on a Saturday, Devisharan pushes his daughter into the well and cries for help. Kalpak rescues her. Devisharan then claims his daughter is now dishonored because she touched another man, and demands Kalpak marry her. Kalpak refuses and leaves. Devisharan advises the king to send spies in yellow robes, as many at the ashram will be wearing that color. The king sends two spies. Devisharan intercepts them at the ashram, pretending to be a co-conspirator, and confirms the false plot. The spies report back, and the king arrests Kalpak and his disciples for treason. Kalpak is sentenced to death by hanging, and his disciples to life imprisonment. Devisharan returns home triumphant and confesses his entire scheme to his daughter, revealing that Kalpak is innocent and that he orchestrated the plot out of wounded pride. The daughter is horrified. She decides to wait until her father falls asleep, then sneak out to the king's palace to reveal the truth and save the innocent Kalpak.
