Summary
This article reconstructs the reign of Rāmapāla, regarded as the last powerful ruler of the Pāla dynasty of Bengal and Bihar. Drawing on the 12th‑century epic “Rāmacarita” by Sandhyākara Nandi and various inscriptions, the author narrates how Rāmapāla restored Pāla authority after a period of instability. It explains the circumstances of the Kaivarta rebellion in Varendra, where a local chieftain usurped power, and shows how Rāmapāla rallied regional chiefs to suppress the revolt and reclaim his ancestral domains. The article details his alliances with neighbouring rulers, strategic marriages and patronage of Buddhist monasteries, particularly the famed Vikramashila and Nālandā universities. It also explores Rāmapāla’s administration, including land grants and revenue measures recorded in copperplate charters. The author argues that Rāmapāla’s success lay in his ability to balance force with diplomacy, securing loyalty from feudatory chiefs while promoting cultural and religious institutions. Yet the essay recognises that his achievements could not halt the long‑term decline of the dynasty, as later Palas failed to match his leadership. By situating Rāmapāla within the broader narrative of eastern Indian history, the article highlights his role in delaying the fragmentation of the region and preserving Buddhist scholarship at a crucial moment.
Conclusion
The article concludes that Rāmapāla’s reign represents a last flowering of Pāla power. Through decisive military campaigns against the Kaivarta rebels and skillful diplomacy with neighbouring chiefs, he revived a declining empire. His support of Buddhist institutions helped sustain Bengal’s cultural life. Despite these achievements, the dynasty’s structural weaknesses meant that Rāmapāla’s successes were temporary. After his death the Pāla realm fragmented, but his efforts delayed that process and left a legacy of patronage remembered in later texts.
