Summary

The present mode of expressing numbers employs nine numerals (0-9) and zero, with notational places for denominations (tens, hundreds, thousands, etc.) arranged from right to left. This has led to hypotheses attributing its origin to right-to-left scripts, but such claims are critiqued for oversimplification and insufficient evidence. The analysis focuses on two primary methods: (1) writing number names in full and (2) using symbols. Most nations adopted a decimal scale with limited numeral vocabulary, though ancient Hindus used up to eighteen denominations even in early Vedic times. Number expressions combine addition, multiplication, and occasional subtractive principles (e.g., "19" as "20−1"). For numbers below 100, smaller units are written first (e.g., "twenty-one"), while higher denominations (thousands, hundreds) precede smaller ones in descending order (e.g., "3,456"). Exceptions exist, such as Arabic allowing ascending order and languages like English and Tibetan maintaining continuous descending order. Sanskrit literature occasionally shows irregularities, but these are rare and do not disrupt the universal norm. Script direction (left-to-right, right-to-left, or top-down) does not significantly alter number formation, which remains consistent across cultures. The study emphasizes that numeral symbolism, though theoretically simple, faced practical complexities in implementation.
