Summary

This narrative tells the story of King Ripupratisatru of Potanapura, who enters a forest after a festival to hunt. The early morning scene is described poetically: mist lifting like a silk curtain, ponds red as lotus filaments and bees humming around water lilies. Enchanted by the forest’s beauty, Ripupratisatru forgets his hunt and wanders until he finds a rivulet where he quenches his thirst. Nearby he sees a woman lying like a golden creeper under a blooming priyaka tree. The woman is his own daughter Mrigavati, though he is unaware of her identity. Captivated by her beauty, he feels sudden desire and approaches her. The ensuing dialogue reveals a moral dilemma. The queen, Bhadra, pleads for the king to recognise his duty and refrain from marrying his daughter, but Ripupratisatru insists, citing divine precedents and the assent of his assembly. A public discussion fails to dissuade him. Mrigavati then speaks of a prophetic dream in which her union with her father would result in the birth of Ardhacakri, a future Tirthankara, and she accepts the marriage as predestined. The story highlights themes of karmic destiny, passion versus duty, and the belief that cosmic justice dictates human affairs.
