अहंकार और ममकार के विसर्जन का महोत्सव

Vol. 49 · No. 03March - 2001pp. 51-54Hindi

Summary

The 137th Terapanth Maryada Mahotsav was held in Gangashahar, Bikaner, from January 29 to 31, 2001. Acharya Shri Mahapragyaji, the head of the Terapanth Dharma Sangh, described the festival as a celebration of the dissolution of ego and attachment. He emphasized that in an age of science and intolerance, creating and following disciplines is both important and exemplary. The foundation of the festival is a document written in 1802, which Acharyashree formally reinstated. The event was attended by Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot, several ministers, members of parliament, and other dignitaries. The first day coincided with Vasant Panchami and was observed as Service Day. Acharyashree stated that spring exists where there is service, and service is the greatest worship. He announced new appointments for various service centers. The Acharya Ahimsa Training Award was jointly presented to Hiralal Shrimali and Dharmendra Acharya. The Mahasabha conferred the highest honor, 'Samaj Bhushan', upon Khemchand Sethia. Due to the devastating earthquake in Gujarat on January 26, the second day, which marks Acharyashree's ascension, was declared Karuna Diwas (Compassion Day). Acharyashree stated that compassion is essential not only in times of distress but also for eradicating casteism, untouchability, and economic inequality. He introduced a mantra for mental strength. The Jain Vishva Bharati announced it would take responsibility for the education of children orphaned by the earthquake. On the final day, Acharyashree emphasized that no society or nation can survive without discipline and called for a widespread campaign for morality.

Conclusion

The 13th Terapanth Maryada Mahotsav, held in Gangashahar from January 29-31, 2001, yielded significant outcomes by redefining compassion as a tool for social reform beyond mere sympathy for suffering. The festival, described as a celebration of ego and attachment dissolution, directly addressed contemporary intolerance by emphasizing discipline and humility. A key implication was the institutionalization of service, with new service center appointments and the declaration of "Karuna Diwas" (Compassion Day) in response to the Gujarat earthquake. The event also launched a "Bodhi Diwas" and announced the Jain Vishva Bharati's commitment to adopt and develop orphaned children and a village in Gujarat. By linking spiritual practice to social responsibility, the Mahotsav demonstrated how religious discipline can foster community resilience and ethical engagement, positioning compassion as essential for eradicating casteism, economic disparity, and promoting peaceful coexistence.
