Summary
The story follows two stepbrothers, Girdhar and Harihar, after their father's death. The father had mentioned ten thousand rupees buried under a cupboard, but when the brothers dug, they found nothing. Girdhar, the elder and cunning brother, soon left for Bombay and returned wealthy, claiming success in a coal contract. Harihar, simple and honest, later went to Bombay and worked hard for a Seth for two years. Pleased, the Seth gave him a silver brick as a reward. Girdhar, greedy and deceitful, swapped the silver brick for an iron one coated with silver, then mocked Harihar when a jeweler exposed the fraud. Girdhar moved out, and Harihar suffered constant thefts and poverty. One day, a fakir gave Harihar a herb, instructing him to mix it with cow dung in a pot and, after fifteen days, pour it over his belongings to turn them to gold. Girdhar stole the pot on the fifth day. On the fifteenth night, Harihar heard Girdhar screaming. He found Girdhar surrounded by black scorpions that had emerged from the dung pot. Harihar saw the stolen silver brick, his father's money, and the broken pot, realizing Girdhar had been the thief all along. The scorpions seemed to attack Girdhar for his betrayal.
