आचार्यश्री तुलसी : एक आलोक पुंज; एक शताब्दी पुरुष

Vol. 57 · No. 10October - 2009pp. 27-32Hindi

Summary

Acharya Shri Tulsi initiated the Anuvrat movement in 1949 to bring fundamental principles of religion into public life. The movement aimed to inspire self-restraint in all humans, rising above caste, religion, region, and class distinctions, and to establish moral values in the country. It reached from a laborer's hut to the Rashtrapati Bhavan, forming organizations in every home, village, and city. The Anuvrat movement guided every class to remain honest in their respective fields, with special initiatives for eradicating untouchability, superstitions, and addictions. Acharya Shri Tulsi was a unique personality committed to freeing religion from the grip of heavenly temptations and fear of hell, focusing on ethical values in public life. He followed Lord Mahavira's path for the awakening of women, breaking meaningless traditions, and establishing new standards while preserving traditional fundamentals. He maintained balance in honor and dishonor, connected directly with people, and shook the consciousness of every class, including those in power. He gave five principles for inter-sect harmony: advocating one's own beliefs without attacking others, tolerance towards others' views, not spreading hatred against other sects, no undesirable behavior like social boycott for sect conversion, and collective efforts to make fundamental religious principles life-pervasive. In 1962, he initiated experiments in spirituality, leading to the development of Preksha Dhyan, a scientific meditation method that has provided relief from stress and imbalance. Along with Preksha Dhyan, the experiments of "Jivan Vigyan" offer solutions to educational problems. Acharya Shri Tulsi was a multi-linguistic creator who wrote notable works in Hindi, Rajasthani, and Sanskrit. He also undertook the editing of Agam literature with a modern, scientific, and non-sectarian perspective, declaring that no sectarian bias would be included. Despite facing opposition for his progressive steps, he continued with doubled speed, and his efforts have resulted in the establishment of moral values and human unity.

Conclusion

The Anuvrat movement, initiated by Acharya Tulsi in 1949, successfully translated core ethical principles into practical social reform, achieving tangible outcomes like the reduction of untouchability and caste discrimination. By establishing grassroots organizations from laborer huts to the presidential palace, the movement fostered a culture of self-discipline and moral accountability across all societal strata. Its campaigns against dowry, purdah, and addiction directly challenged entrenched orthodoxies, while innovations like Preksha Dhyan provided scientific, non-sectarian solutions to modern stress. The movement’s emphasis on interfaith harmony and rational, experiential spirituality over ritualism created a lasting framework for ethical living. Ultimately, Acharya Tulsi’s work demonstrated that moral renewal is possible through inclusive, action-oriented leadership, leaving a legacy of social cohesion and individual integrity that continues to guide contemporary efforts toward a more just and conscientious society.
