Philosophical Concepts in Ancient Jaina Literature

By Pooja Chandel

Vol. 322009pp. 61-69English

Summary

This paper provides an overview of key philosophical doctrines presented in early Jain texts. It discusses the Jaina conception of reality as consisting of conscious (jīva) and non‑conscious (ajīva) substances, each with countless qualities. The doctrine of anekāntavāda asserts that no single statement can exhaustively describe such a complex reality; instead, truth is revealed through multiple viewpoints (naya) and expressed through the doctrine of syādvāda, which uses conditional predicates to convey relative truths. The article explains how Jain thinkers classify knowledge (jñāna) into five types and elaborate on the means of valid cognition (pramāṇa). Ethical implications of these concepts are explored: understanding the multiplicity of truth fosters tolerance and non‑violence, leading to spiritual progress. The author situates Jain philosophy within the broader Indian philosophical tradition, contrasting it with monistic schools and highlighting its unique contribution to debates on metaphysics, epistemology and ethics.

Conclusion

The study concludes that ancient Jaina literature offers a sophisticated philosophical system combining pluralistic metaphysics, nuanced epistemology and rigorous ethics. Its insights remain relevant for contemporary dialogues on tolerance, relativism and the pursuit of liberation.
