Summary

This PDF presents the ninth issue of a series on early Jnana Vidya, focusing on the 8th-century spiritual poet Joindu. Various scholars examine his personality and literary contributions from different perspectives. Acharya Joindu is described as having mastery over the Apabhramsha language and is considered a later spiritual poet in the tradition of Kundakundacharya, who preached pure spirituality. His famous works include *Paramatmaprakasha* and *Yogasara*, which are infused with self-realization (*Atmanushruti*). These compositions poetically describe the journey from the external self to the Supreme Self. Joindu’s mystical writings significantly influenced later Apabhramsha poets and Hindi saint-poets, notably the revolutionary spiritual ideas of Kabir. The subject matter of his works is purely spiritual rather than sectarian, making them universally relevant. His concepts regarding the soul are timeless and universal, offering great utility for modern human life plagued by conflicts arising from materialism. Due to this quality, he can be called a messenger of the Lokadarshi tradition. He is considered more a saint and teacher than a poet, expressing his ideas through simple poetry. His repetitions aim to firmly imprint the spirituality he expresses on the minds of audiences and readers. His teachings possess the flow and sweetness of the Upanishads and are supremely auspicious. This issue covers topics related to Joindu’s personality and work, including his concepts of soul, body, and Supreme Self; ideas on bondage and liberation; analysis of *Paramatmaprakasha* and *Yogasara*; his literary evaluation; and his influence on Hindi saint-poets. A debate among scholars regarding whether *Amritashiti* is Joindu’s creation remains unresolved, so an article titled “Joindu and Amritashiti” is included for scholarly consideration. The issue also begins a discussion on Acharya Hemachandra’s Prakrit grammar sutras. The editor expresses gratitude to contributors and the managing committee of Shri Mahavirji for publication support.

Conclusion

This issue’s focus on Ācārya Joindu reaffirms the enduring relevance of his pure spiritual teachings for contemporary life, offering a timeless antidote to conflicts born of materialism. By presenting diverse scholarly perspectives on his works, including the analysis of Paramātmaprakāśa and Yogāsāra, the volume deepens understanding of his influence on later Apabhraṃśa and Hindi saint-poets like Kabīr. The unresolved debate over Amṛtāśīti’s authorship invites further critical inquiry, while the new series on Hemacandra’s Prakrit grammar expands the journal’s scholarly scope. Ultimately, this collection not only illuminates Joindu’s unique synthesis of Upaniṣadic wisdom and accessible poetry but also provides fresh direction and inspiration for spiritual study and research, bridging ancient insight with modern existential needs.
