कविमनीषी योगीन्दु का काव्यशास्त्रीय मूल्यांकन

Vol. 09 · No. 0November -1988pp. 55-61Hindi

Summary

The text provides a literary evaluation of the poet-scholar Yogindu, focusing on his works "Paramatmaprakasha" and "Yogasara," composed in the Apabhramsha language. Yogindu is recognized within the tradition of Jain poets such as Svayambhu, Pushpadanta, and Dhanapala. The analysis applies classical Indian poetic criteria, including subject matter, rasa (aesthetic emotion), nature depiction, figures of speech, meter, and language. The central theme of both poems is spiritual and oriented toward liberation (moksha). "Paramatmaprakasha" traces the soul's journey from the external self (bahiratma) through the inner self (antaratma) to the supreme self (paramatma), emphasizing renunciation and detachment. "Yogasara" similarly discusses the soul's forms and advocates for abandoning both sin and merit to achieve freedom from karmic bonds. Regarding rasa, the poems predominantly evoke shanta-rasa (the peaceful sentiment), which the text considers the highest, leading to transcendental bliss. Nature is used sparingly and only for illustrative purposes, as the poetry is fundamentally oriented toward renunciation rather than worldly engagement. The language is accessible Apabhramsha, chosen to convey complex spiritual ideas to a general audience. It includes colloquial expressions, proverbs, and metaphors, such as comparing a beautiful woman in the heart to two swords in one sheath. Figures of speech like metaphor (rupaka) and simile (upama) are employed for clarity, not ornamentation. Examples include comparing the body to a temple and the five senses to a deer grazing in the forest of sensory objects. The analysis concludes that Yogindu successfully uses poetic craft to make profound spiritual teachings relatable and effective.

Conclusion

The analysis confirms that Yogindu’s *Paramātmaprakāśa* and *Yogasāra* are not merely religious texts but sophisticated literary works deserving of formal kāvyaśāstra evaluation. Their primary implication is the successful integration of profound ādhyātmika (spiritual) themes—specifically the journey from bahirātma to paramātma—within the framework of classical poetic theory. The outcome is a unique literary achievement where śāntarasa dominates, and alamkāras like rūpaka and upamā serve didactic clarity rather than mere ornamentation. The use of accessible Apabhraṃśa, enriched with lokokti and muhāvara, makes complex spiritual concepts relatable to a general audience. Ultimately, this study establishes Yogindu’s place in the broader Apabhraṃśa tradition alongside Svayambhū and Puṣpadanta, demonstrating that Jain spiritual poetry can be rigorously analyzed
