The text recounts the story of Gathapati Kundakolika, a wealthy and respected citizen of Kampilpur, who becomes a devoted follower of Lord Mahavira after hearing his teachings. He adopts the twelve vows of a householder and undergoes a profound transformation, renouncing his material wealth and status. While meditating in his garden, a celestial being (deva) appears, attempting to shake his faith. The deva praises the doctrines of Goshalaka, a former disciple of Mahavira who had become his rival, and criticizes Mahavira’s emphasis on individual effort and action. Goshalaka’s philosophy asserts that everything is determined by fate (niyati), rendering human effort meaningless. Kundakolika challenges the deva, arguing that if everything is predetermined, then the deva’s own divine status must have been achieved without effort, which is illogical. He points out that inanimate objects like stones and trees, which lack the capacity for effort, would then also become gods. The deva is left confused and unable to respond. Kundakolika advises the deva to seek truth through his own effort, as Mahavira teaches self-reliance. The deva, defeated, returns the items he had taken and departs. Later, when Mahavira visits Kampilpur again, Kundakolika recounts the debate. Mahavira praises his steadfastness and uses the incident to teach his monks that even a lay follower can defeat rival philosophers through logic and reasoning. The story concludes with Kundakolika eventually renouncing household life, taking up full ascetic practices, and after a period of intense spiritual discipline, dying and being reborn as a deity in the Saudharma heaven.
