Summary

The editorial discusses the state and direction of Prakrit studies. It begins by noting that language evolves with human development, and that Vedic Sanskrit and Prakrit are closely related, sharing phonetic and developmental similarities. Despite numerous centers for Vedic and Sanskrit studies in India, such as the Lal Bahadur Shastri Central Sanskrit University and the Rashtriya Sanskrit Sansthan, the study of Prakrit remains insufficient. While some projects for surveying, collecting, and studying Prakrit language and literature exist, they are inadequate given the vastness, uniqueness, and contemporary relevance of Prakrit literature. As a result, a comprehensive catalog of Prakrit manuscripts has not been compiled, and many unpublished manuscripts remain in deteriorating condition. Efforts to make Prakrit studies more attractive and linked to livelihoods include its inclusion in civil service exams, the President's award for advanced study, NET eligibility, and postgraduate programs at several universities. However, public interest remains low, partly due to the overall decline of arts subjects compared to professional courses. The editorial emphasizes the need to promote Prakrit as the language of the Agamas, and to focus on preservation, editing, translation, critical study, and the training of experts. Institutions like the Jain Vidya Sansthan and Prakrit Bharati Academy offer correspondence courses, while the National Prakrit Study and Research Centre at Shravanabelagola runs structured programs from entrance to advanced diplomas. Two periodicals, *Prakrit Vidya* and *Prakrit Tirtha*, are regularly published, along with several other Jain-related journals. The editorial also highlights the need for more systematic work on the scientific aspects of Prakrit literature, listing 66 books that explore the relationship between Jainism and science, covering topics from mathematics and cosmology to biology and psychology. It notes that while substantial work exists, it lacks coordination, and calls for authoritative books on each subject summarizing the contributions of Jain acharyas. The editorial concludes that Prakrit literature is vast and diverse, both published and unpublished, and that a comprehensive action plan for its study is urgently needed.

Conclusion

The document underscores a critical juncture for Prakrit studies: despite a rich literary heritage and ongoing scholarly efforts, the field remains fragmented and under-resourced. The implications are clear—without systematic cataloging of manuscripts, integration of scientific research, and enhanced public engagement, Prakrit’s potential for interdisciplinary insight, particularly with modern science, remains unrealized. The outcome hinges on coordinated action: prioritizing manuscript preservation, expanding academic programs, and fostering institutional collaboration to create cohesive, authoritative resources. Success would not only revitalize Prakrit scholarship but also bridge ancient wisdom with contemporary knowledge, ensuring its relevance for future generations.
