Summary

This issue of the research journal 'Jainvidya' is presented to readers as a special edition dedicated to Pandit Ashadhar. Pandit Ashadhar was a versatile genius of the thirteenth century, an extraordinary poet and a scholar deeply learned in Jain Agamas. His knowledge was profound and unparalleled. He made an unprecedented contribution to enriching Jain literature by composing numerous texts in Sanskrit on subjects including logic, grammar, poetry, rhetoric, spirituality, Puranas, lexicography, religious law, yoga, medicine, and astrology. In addition to creating about twenty original works, he also composed many commentaries, annotations, worship rituals, devotional pieces, and consecration texts. His timeless work 'Dharmamrita' is divided into two parts: 'Sagara Dharmamrita' and 'Anagara Dharmamrita', which delineate the conduct for householders and ascetics, respectively. Due to his immense knowledge, many monks and scholars honored him with titles such as 'Prajnapunja', 'Naya-Vishvachakshu', 'Kali-Kalidasa', and 'Suri'. Despite being a householder, he is referred to as 'Acharyakalpa'. In the Digambara Jain tradition, no other householder scholar and author of his stature is evident. The editors express gratitude to all the scholars who contributed their writings to this issue. The editor, members of the editorial board, and associate editors are all deserving of thanks.

Conclusion

This special issue on Pandit Ashadhar establishes a critical benchmark for Jain studies, demonstrating how a single thirteenth-century householder-scholar could reshape an entire intellectual tradition. By compiling his contributions across twenty original works and numerous commentaries on logic, grammar, medicine, and yoga, the volume challenges the assumption that monastic ordination was necessary for authoritative scriptural commentary. The implications extend beyond historical appreciation: Ashadhar’s dual-category framework in Dharmamrita, addressing both lay and ascetic conduct, offers a practical model for contemporary Jain communities navigating tradition and modernity. His recognition as “Acharyakalpa” despite remaining a householder provides a powerful precedent for inclusive scholarship, suggesting that doctrinal authority need not be confined to renunciates. This collection ultimately validates the study of lay intellectuals as transformative agents, urging future research to recover similar figures whose contributions have been overshadowed by monastic-centric narratives.
