Summary

Pandit Ashadhara, a renowned scholar of the 13th century, was born in Mandalgarh fort, Bhilwara district, Rajasthan. His father, Sallakshana, was a devoted Jain who enjoyed royal patronage, and his mother was Ratni. He married Sarasvati, a highly cultured and educated woman, and had a son named Chhahada, who pleased King Arjuna Varma of Malwa. At age 19, during the invasion of Sapadalaksha by Muslim ruler Shahabuddin, Ashadhara left his birthplace with his family and settled in Dharapuri, Malwa, where King Vindhya Varma ruled. There, he studied Jainism, logic, and Jainendra grammar under Pandit Dharasena, a disciple of Vadiraja, and his disciple Pandit Mahavira. He became highly learned in all Jain and non-Jain literature. Later, he moved to Nalchha, where he began his literary work. Ashadhara was a versatile genius and extraordinary poet. Munis and scholars honored him with titles like "Prajna-Puspa" (treasure of knowledge) by Madanakirti Muni, "Naya Vishvachakshu" and "Kali Kalidasa" by Udayasena Muni, and "Suri" and "Shiromani" by Bhattaraka Devendrakirti. Later scholars called him "Acharyakalpa." He enriched Jain literature by composing numerous works in Sanskrit on logic, grammar, poetry, rhetoric, spirituality, Puranas, lexicography, religious law, yoga, Ayurveda, and astrology. His work "Adhyatma-Rahasya" reflects his deep spiritual experience. He was unmatched in the Digambara tradition for his expertise in rituals, as seen in his "Jinayajnakalpa," which describes various religious procedures in six chapters. His "Dharmamrita" is a timeless work on conduct for

Conclusion

The document establishes that Pandit Ashadhar, a 13th-century polymath, was not merely a scholar but a transformative figure in Digambara Jain tradition. His prolific Sanskrit works, particularly the *Dharmamrita* and *Sagar Dharmamrita*, systematically codified the conduct for both ascetics and householders, integrating philosophy, ritual, and daily ethics. The implications are profound: Ashadhar’s synthesis of diverse subjects—from logic and grammar to medicine and astrology—created a comprehensive, authoritative framework that standardized Jain practice. His ability to present complex spiritual concepts in an engaging, poetic style ensured his teachings remained accessible and influential. The outcome is a lasting legacy; his texts became foundational, with later scholars and monks seeking his guidance. This special issue of *Jain Vidya* underscores that Ashadhar’s work continues to illuminate Jain thought, offering timeless relevance for contemporary discussions on ethical living and spiritual discipline.
