Summary

The text focuses on the 13th-century Jain scholar and poet Āśādhara, who was unique for composing religious texts while remaining a householder, a task previously undertaken only by monks and ascetics. He was born into the Vyāghreravāla lineage, the son of Sallakṣaṇa, in the fortress of Maṇḍalaka (Māṇḍalgaḍh) within the Sāpādalakṣa region. Due to an invasion by a Turkic ruler, likely Muḥammad Ghūrī, his family fled to the Mālava region with King Vindhyavarman, settling in Dhārā. There, Āśādhara studied Jain scriptures under the scholar Mahāvīra. He later moved to Nalakacchapura (Nālchā) to promote the Jain faith during the reign of King Arjunavarman. Āśādhara authored over twenty known works, with four major texts providing detailed colophons about his life and times. His first dated work, the *Jinayajñakalpa* with commentary, was completed in Vikram Samvat 1285 (1228 CE). This was followed by the *Triṣaṣṭismṛti Pañjikā* in 1235 CE, the commentary *Sāgāra Dharmāmṛta* in 1239 CE, and the *Anagāra Dharmāmṛta* commentary in 1243 CE. His most significant work is the *Dharmāmṛta Śāstra*, a comprehensive text on the duties of both laypeople (*śrāvaka*) and monks. He composed two separate commentaries on its sections: the *Bhavyakumudacandrikā* for the householder portion and another for the ascetic portion. His writings also include the *Prameyaratnākara* on logic, the *Bharateśvarābhyudaya* epic, a commentary

Conclusion

This analysis reveals that Āśādhara’s legacy is not merely that of a prolific author but of a transformative figure who bridged the lay and monastic worlds of Jain scholarship. By composing authoritative texts while remaining a householder, he fundamentally expanded who could contribute to religious discourse, setting a precedent for future generations. His twenty-plus works, spanning logic, poetry, medicine, and law, demonstrate a deliberate synthesis of diverse knowledge systems, ensuring Jain teachings remained relevant in a changing political landscape. The migration of his family from Sapādalakṣa to Mālava due to Turkic invasions underscores how historical upheaval directly shaped intellectual production, embedding resilience into the tradition itself. Ultimately, Āśādhara’s output—especially the enduring *Dharmāmṛta*—provided a comprehensive, accessible framework for both ascetics and laity, cementing his role as a pivotal architect of medieval Jain praxis and ensuring his methods of integration and adaptation would influence doctrinal
