Summary

The second issue of the early "Jain Vidya" magazine is presented to readers. Jain acharyas, scholars, ascetics, and laypeople have significantly contributed to the growth of various literary forms in every Indian language. Approximately eighty percent of known Apabhramsha literature is the work of Jain writers, making their role in enriching this language's literature prominent. Although Apabhramsha was a vernacular of North India, its earliest known literature was composed in the South, with poets like Svayambhu and Pushpadanta working in Karnataka. These works reflect the social, political, and cultural conditions of their time, aiding scholars in studying language development. The period of Apabhramsha's growth is from the 6th to the 11th century CE, but literary production continued afterward, with the last known work being Pandit Bhagavatidas's "Mudgalakshana Charitra" from 1700 Vikram Samvat. The study of Apabhramsha is essential for understanding the history of Prakrit and modern Khari Boli. Early efforts by scholars like Pischel and Jacobi were followed by Indian scholars, but comprehensive research remains incomplete. Most known Apabhramsha literature comes from Jain libraries, yet many collections remain unsurveyed. The first issue of the magazine was a special issue on Svayambhu, and the plan is to publish a special issue on each Apabhramsha poet chronologically. This issue focuses on Pushpadanta, whose works include "Mahapurana," "Jasaharachariu," and "Nayakumarachariu." Due to abundant material, the study is divided into two parts; this first part covers "Mahapurana." The issue also includes an annotated edition of the spiritual work "Prananda." Future issues will cover poets Dhanapala and Dhavala. The editor requests scholars to contribute original works and encourage others to do so.

Conclusion

This second issue of the Jain Vidya journal advances the critical study of Apabhramsha literature, emphasizing the foundational role of Jain poets in its development. The focus on Mahakavi Pushpadanta, following the earlier special issue on Svayambhu, demonstrates a systematic effort to recover and analyze this linguistic heritage. The publication of the spiritual work "Prananda" with a new translation and critical apparatus provides scholars with a more reliable text. The editorial commitment to publishing original source materials, while acknowledging authorial responsibility for content, ensures academic rigor. The project's broader implications are significant: by systematically examining each known Apabhramsha poet, this series promises to illuminate the social, political, and cultural contexts of medieval India. The call for continued contributions and the plan to cover poets like Dhanapala and Dhavala indicate a sustained scholarly endeavor that will deepen understanding of language evolution and literary traditions.
