Summary

Acharya Tulsi was born on October 20, 1914, into a Svetambar Terapanth Jain family in Rajasthan. At age 11, he took Jain monk initiation under Acharya Kalugani. By age 22, he became the ninth Acharya of the Terapanth sect, which was then relatively small. Through his leadership, discipline, and vision, he transformed the sect into a widely recognized institution. During the first 11 years of his leadership, he focused on internal development, strengthening education and literature within the community. On March 1, 1949, at age 34, he launched the Anuvrat movement, a non-sectarian ethical campaign that gained support from intellectuals and the general public across India. He traveled extensively on foot to promote values such as non-violence, coexistence, truthfulness, integrity, interfaith harmony, moral conduct, and human unity. He also worked against addictions, untouchability, and for women's awakening. At age 41, he undertook research on Jain Agamas, contributing significantly to oriental studies. He later nurtured his successor, Acharya Mahapragya, and supported the development of Preksha Dhyan and life science, blending spirituality with science. On February 18, 1994, he relinquished the position of Acharya, creating a new precedent. He received several awards, including the Indira Gandhi National Unity Award. He passed away on June 23, 1997, in Gangashahar, Bikaner. The Acharya Tulsi Birth Centenary Celebration was organized in 2013-2014 under the spiritual leadership of Acharya Mahashraman, the 11th head of the Terapanth order. A centenary committee was formed, outlining projects including 100 monk initiations, a nationwide Anuvrat campaign, international conferences, educational programs, publication of his complete works, translation of selected writings, an animated film, and construction of memorials and roads named after him.
