Astronomical Evidence on the Age of the Rgveda

Vol. 37 · No. 2 & 3June & Sept. 1961pp. 101-126English

Summary

This extensive supplement examines the antiquity of the Rgveda through linguistic, textual and astronomical evidence. After reviewing the views of scholars like Tilak, Whitney and Jacobi, the author analyses passages from Brahmana and Sutra texts that mention the positions of solstices and nakshatras. Tilak’s hypothesis—that references to the winter solstice in the Pleiades (Krttika) imply a composition date around 4000 B.C.—is contrasted with more conservative scholars who argue that Vedic astronomy borrowed Greek and Babylonian ideas. The author assesses rituals like the Gavamayana, Caturmasya sacrifice and Taittiriya Samhita to show how year‑long Sattras were structured and whether Indo‑Aryans were aware of equinoxes. By comparing the positions of solstices and equinoxes recorded in the Vedanga Jyotisa with those in the Rgveda, and considering precession, the article concludes that while some early observers possessed astronomical knowledge, the precise solstitial data are difficult to date. Weighing linguistic evidence (e.g., words for metals), archaeological correlates (the absence of iron) and astronomical calculations, the study places the composition of the Rgveda between 1500 and 1200 B.C., predating later Brahmana texts yet postdating the decline of the Indus civilisation.

Conclusion

The article synthesises diverse strands of evidence to estimate the Rgveda’s age. Although astronomical clues are alluring, the author argues for caution and favours a mid‑second‑millennium B.C. date, emphasising that interdisciplinary research—combining philology, archaeology and astronomy—is essential for refining this chronology.
