It describes the plough, yoke and accessories and lists other implements such as sickles, hoes, mortars, sieves and granaries. The author explains how soil preparation varied by crop: radish fields were ploughed sixteen times, cotton half as often, and paddy even less. The choice of auspicious days and months for ploughing and sowing reflects a blend of agricultural science and ritual. The article discusses manuring in detail, noting that ancient farmers appreciated the nutritive value of dung, bones and decomposed organic matter. They composted dung heaps over months, buried them in pits and spread the manure before sowing. Irrigation methods included wells, canals and reservoirs, and texts recommended draining excess water to prevent crop diseases. The study catalogues cereals, pulses, spices and fruits grown in different seasons and records seed treatments with ghee, milk or ash. It also touches on crop rotation, fallowing and pest control. By comparing Indian practices with those of other ancient civilisations, the author argues that Indian agronomy developed sophisticated techniques independently and made significant contributions to world agriculture.
Conclusion
The survey shows that ancient Indian cultivators possessed a nuanced understanding of soil management, manuring, irrigation and crop cycles. Their careful integration of empirical knowledge and ritual ensured sustainable yields and supported large populations. Recognising this agricultural heritage challenges the notion that scientific farming began only in modern times and highlights India’s early innovations in agronomy.
