Summary

Jain literature's influence on Rajasthani painting is evident through thematic and stylistic exchanges. Key impacts include the adoption of Jain narrative motifs like *kalpasutra* tales and *Jataka* stories, which enriched Rajasthani painting's symbolic vocabulary. Jain emphasis on spiritual asceticism and non-violence (*ahimsa*) is reflected in Rajasthani art's serene depictions of ascetics and nature. Stylistically, Jain manuscripts' illuminated miniatures influenced Rajasthani painting's intricate detailing and use of gold in manuscript art. The interaction fostered mutual exchange, with Rajasthani artists incorporating Jain iconography into local folk traditions, while Jain patrons commissioned Rajasthani artists for temple murals and manuscripts. This cross-pollination is particularly visible in 18th-century Marwar paintings, where Jain themes merged with Rajput royal patronage. The syncretism resulted in a distinct visual language blending Jain spirituality with Rajasthani aesthetic sensibilities.

Conclusion

This study reveals that Jain literature significantly influenced Rajasthani painting through thematic and iconographic exchanges, particularly in depicting Jina imagery, spiritual symbolism, and narrative compositions. The integration of Jain narrative traditions into regional art led to a distinct synthesis, visible in the use of symbolic motifs like lotus positions, meditative postures, and cosmic diagrams. The influence is particularly evident in the adaptation of Jain narrative cycles, such as the Kalpa Sūtra stories, which were translated into vibrant visual sequences. This cross-pollination enriched Rajasthani painting with deeper spiritual and philosophical dimensions, while also preserving regional artistic identity. The findings highlight the role of Jain patronage and textual traditions in shaping the aesthetic and thematic contours of Rajasthani art, offering a unique lens to understand cultural interactions in medieval North India.
