Summary

Mahakavi Pushpadant, a 10th-century poet, is regarded as one of the greatest poets of the Apabhramsha language. He was a scholar with exceptional observational skills and poetic talent, known for his self-respect and humanity. He preferred living in mountain caves but could not tolerate crookedness. Born a Brahmin in the south, he remained steadfast in his ideology. His scholarship and deep thinking were respected by Bharata and Nanna, leading to the creation of three high-quality epics: Mahapurana, Jasaharachariu, and Nayakumarachariu. Pushpadant was rich in ideas, integrating his thoughts into the narrative thread across all fields. Regarding dharma, he considered it a mysterious, experiential truth. He believed only one who has erased the distinction between self and other, understood the world and death, and dared to look within can reach the reality of dharma. His views on dharma are expressed through a synthesis of absolute and practical perspectives, making them relevant even today. The background of his works features the personalities of great men who either punish the irreligious, converting them, or free society from their grip. He linked the definition of dharma with adharma, stating that adharma is where the wicked are protected and the virtuous are killed. Unlike Samantabhadra's 3rd-century definition, Pushpadant felt the need to define dharma in the 10th century to bring it into society. He equated dharma with ahimsa, making compassion for living beings the primary principle. He also advocated for righteous war to stop unjust actions, considering valor a quality of the good to be used for the uplift of the downtrodden. He discussed householder dharma and monk dharma with practicality, emphasizing compassion, truthfulness, non-stealing, and celibacy. He prescribed avoiding night meals, alcohol, meat, and honey, and observing vows. He opposed giving initiation to children, advocating for gradual progression to monkhood after household life. His works are filled with poetic beauty

Conclusion

Mahakavi Pushpadanta's synthesis of dharma and practical ethics offers enduring relevance for contemporary society. His emphasis on non-violence as the core of righteousness, balanced with the necessity of just action against evil, provides a nuanced framework for moral conduct. The poet's advocacy for social reform—including protection of children from premature asceticism, dignified treatment of women, and compassionate use of wealth—reflects a progressive vision that transcends his tenth-century context. His integration of householder duties with spiritual ideals, avoiding rigid doctrinal boundaries, makes his teachings accessible and actionable. The rich tapestry of similes drawn from nature, human experience, and mythology not only demonstrates his literary genius but also grounds abstract philosophical concepts in relatable imagery. Ultimately, Pushpadanta's work remains a vital resource for understanding how ancient wisdom can inform modern ethical dilemmas, offering practical pathways for balancing spiritual aspirations with worldly responsibilities.
