Summary

The text examines the poetic works of Mahakavi Pushpadant, focusing on the expression of rasa (aesthetic essence) in his Apabhramsha poetry. It identifies two linguistic streams in Apabhramsha literature: a literary language following Sanskrit and Prakrit traditions with ornamentation, and a more colloquial, free-flowing form. Pushpadant’s compositions incorporate both. Rasa is described as the soul of poetry, with the aesthetic experience (ananda) considered akin to the bliss of Brahman. According to Bharata Muni, rasa arises from the combination of vibhava, anubhava, and sanchari bhava with a sthayi bhava. The nine primary sthayi bhavas and their corresponding rasas are listed, including shringara, veera, and shanta. In Apabhramsha poetry, veera and shanta rasas are prominent, with shanta often being the ultimate goal, reflecting Jain values of detachment and impermanence. Pushpadant’s works, such as Mahapurana and Nayakumarachariu, express veera, shringara, and shanta rasas. Veera rasa is depicted in battles between Vasudevas and Prativasudevas, with vivid descriptions of warriors and their wives. Shringara rasa appears in descriptions of feminine beauty, both in union and separation, as seen in the portrayal of Sita and Sulochana. Karuna and vibhatsa rasas emerge in post-war scenes, such as Mandodari’s lament. Shanta rasa, considered the highest, arises from detachment and equanimity, aiming to inspire vairagya (renunciation). Pushpadant’s skill is evident in his innovative treatment of recurring themes, like the dream vision repeated 24 times in Mahapurana, each with fresh imagery and language. His works influenced later Sanskrit, Apabhramsha, and Rajasthani poets, cementing his legacy as a master of rasa and poetic expression.

Conclusion

The analysis of Mahakavi Pushpadant’s works reveals that his poetry masterfully integrates the three primary rasas—shringara, veera, and shanta—with shanta rasa serving as the ultimate culmination. This reflects the Jain literary tradition’s emphasis on spiritual detachment and the transience of worldly life. Pushpadant’s innovative use of language, blending both classical and colloquial streams, and his ability to evoke profound emotional responses through vivid imagery and symbolic contrasts, establish him as a pivotal figure in Apabhramsha literature. His influence on later Sanskrit, Apabhramsha, and Rajasthani poets underscores his enduring legacy. The consistent thematic focus on renunciation and inner peace, even within heroic and romantic contexts, highlights the deeper philosophical purpose of his poetry: guiding readers toward spiritual liberation. Thus, Pushpadant’s work not only enriches the aesthetic tradition but also serves as a vehicle for moral and spiritual instruction, cementing his place as a master
