ईश्वर का बेटा

Vol. 50 · No. 06June - 2002pp. 50-53Hindi

Summary

The three sons of the deceased chief priest, aware of their own misconduct including drinking alcohol, violence, and improper rituals, conspired to retain their hereditary position after the king announced a public selection for the new priest. They decided to visit the minister and bribe him to influence the king. The minister accepted their bribe and went to the king to argue for continuing the hereditary tradition. The king, however, revealed he knew about the bribe and the sons' misdeeds, stating that a king must see with a thousand eyes. He dismissed the minister from his post, though arranged for his family's support. On the day of the selection, nearly eighty candidates, mostly Brahmins proud of their pure lineage, were interviewed. One candidate, Vinamranand, arrived late. He explained he had spent the morning clearing thorny bushes from the path used by devotees to reach the temple, prioritizing their comfort. When asked his caste, he said he was of a noble lineage, and when asked whose son he was, he replied he was the son of God, as all humans are God's children. He was an orphan, learned in prayers, and willing to learn from a guru. The king consulted his ministers and then announced that Vinamranand was chosen as the new priest, declaring he wanted a humble, compassionate human-priest who serves others, not one proud of caste or lineage. The story concludes with a parable about a father who taught his lazy son the value of hard work by telling him he had buried money in the field, leading the son to dig the entire field, which the elder brother then advised him to sow with seeds, resulting in a bountiful harvest.

Conclusion

The document's narrative culminates in a decisive rejection of hereditary entitlement and corruption, with King Durgaram establishing a merit-based selection for the temple priest. This outcome directly challenges the entrenched Brahminical pride and the moral failings of the former priest's sons, who attempted bribery. The appointment of Vinamranand, a humble and service-oriented candidate who prioritized clearing the devotees' path, underscores that true worth lies in compassion and action, not lineage. The parallel fable reinforces this, showing that effort, not idle inheritance, yields prosperity. The implications are clear: institutions thrive when leadership is earned through integrity and public service, while deceit and privilege lead to downfall. This reform restores the temple's sanctity and sets a precedent for just governance.
