Summary

A large advertising balloon for "Jock" cough drops, tethered to the roof of a Mumbai building, becomes the center of a children's art competition. Among the participants are Nandu Navathe, a boy with a habit of lying and jealousy, and Banesh, also known as Faster Fene, a famously daring boy. Nandu, resentful of Faster Fene's reputation, decides to play a trick. As Faster Fene examines the balloon's thick nylon rope, Nandu unties the knot. The balloon, caught by a strong gust of wind, lifts off instantly with Faster Fene hanging from one of its metal links. Panic erupts on the roof and in the streets below as people watch the boy being carried away. The balloon, made of strong, flexible plastic, rises higher and drifts westward. Faster Fene, terrified and dizzy, realizes he cannot hold on much longer. He remembers that a balloon has a valve to release air, but this one does not. Desperate, he uses his free hand to retrieve his belt from his waist. With great effort, he swings the belt's buckle and strikes the balloon repeatedly until the pin punctures the plastic. The balloon begins to deflate and slowly descends. Below, fishermen in their boats have been watching the boy. They clear a space and spread their nets to catch him. The balloon lands safely in the nets, and Faster Fene, overcome with relief, loses consciousness. He later wakes up at home, with his aunt assuring him that the doctors say he is fine.

Conclusion

The document's outcome underscores the critical implications of unchecked rivalry and reckless behavior among youth. The incident, where Nandu's prank to loosen the balloon rope inadvertently sends Faster Fene soaring into the sky, highlights how petty jealousy can escalate into life-threatening situations. This event forces a confrontation with the consequences of Nandu's actions, as he must grapple with the fear and guilt of causing such danger. The rescue by fishermen, who adapt their nets to save the boy, demonstrates the power of community intervention in averting tragedy. Ultimately, the story serves as a cautionary tale about the need for responsibility and the potential for harm when competition turns malicious, emphasizing that even minor acts of spite can have severe, unforeseen outcomes.
