Various Views on Svabhava: A Critical Survey

By Ram Krishna Bhattacharya

Vol. 30 · No. 12006pp. 32-59English

Summary

The notion of svabhāva – intrinsic nature or own being – occupies a pivotal place in Indian philosophical debates. This survey collates and critically evaluates the various interpretations of svabhāva across major schools. In the Vaiśeṣika and early Nyāya traditions, svabhāva denotes the essential properties that define substance categories; the author outlines how these schools distinguish between inherent qualities (guṇa) and relational qualities (sāmānya), and how svabhāva underpins their realism. In contrast, Buddhist thinkers such as Nāgārjuna and the Madhyamaka critique the notion, arguing that all dharmas are empty of own‑nature (niḥsvabhāva); this section discusses the logical arguments against intrinsic existence and the ethical implications of this stance. Sāṃkhya presents yet another perspective, positing that the three guṇas constitute the svabhāva of prakṛti, while puruṣa is pure consciousness; the article examines how this dualism resolves questions of agency and liberation. Advaita Vedānta reinterprets svabhāva as the undifferentiated existence–consciousness–bliss of Brahman, transcending all attributes. The survey also considers Jaina views, which combine realism with a doctrine of multifacetedness (anekānta), allowing entities to possess both conventional and ultimate natures. Through comparative analysis, the author highlights common themes and divergences: the tension between essence and relation, the role of causality, and the ethical stakes of positing intrinsic nature. The article concludes by reflecting on how these philosophical explorations of svabhāva continue to inform contemporary discussions of identity, ontology and epistemology in South Asian thought.

Conclusion

A comparative survey of svabhāva theories shows that Indian philosophers grappled with the tension between essence and emptiness in diverse ways. These debates continue to inspire contemporary reflections on identity and reality across cultural contexts.
