कानून व्यवस्था के संरक्षक वैदिक करण देवता

By Shashi Kashyap

Vol. 30 · No. 12006pp. 120-125Hindi

Summary

This Hindi article examines the role of Vedic deities in upholding law and social order. Beginning with a survey of Ṛgvedic hymns addressed to Varuṇa, Mitra and Aryaman, the author analyses how these gods are praised as guardians of ṛta, the cosmic order that undergirds moral behaviour. Varuṇa, often depicted with a noose, is shown to punish oath‑breakers and uphold contracts, while Mitra oversees agreements and friendships. The article then explores later Brāhmaṇa and Smṛti texts where these deities are invoked in judicial contexts, presiding over ordeals and oaths. Drawing on comparative mythology, the author notes parallels with the functions of Dike and Themis in Greek myth. In discussing the contemporary relevance of these figures, the paper suggests that the idea of divine guardianship of law reinforces the sacredness of ethical conduct and may inspire respect for justice. The article concludes by reflecting on how ancient conceptions of law and divine oversight can inform modern discussions of legal ethics and the moral responsibilities of those who administer justice.

Conclusion

Reflecting on Vedic deities as guardians of law reminds us that ethical conduct has long been tied to cosmic order. Ancient myths can still illuminate contemporary discussions on justice and morality.
