Karmabandh aur Uske Karan
By Shekhar Chandra Jain
Summary
This article examines the concept of karmic bondage and identifies its causes. The author asserts that karma is a material substance that binds to the soul due to activities driven by passion. He explains that karma has four binding factors: wrong belief, non‑abstinence, negligence and passions. Among these, passions such as anger, pride, deceit and greed are the main causes of karmic influx. The article discusses how these mental states generate vibrations in the soul, attracting karmic particles and leading to future suffering. It emphasises that actions alone do not bind; rather, it is the attachment and aversion accompanying actions. The author draws on Jain scriptures to illustrate how even small acts of violence or falsehood can accumulate significant karmic weight if done with intense emotions. He also explains that virtuous acts performed with humility and detachment produce less binding karma. The article then suggests methods to prevent karmabandha: cultivating right faith, observing vows, practicing mindfulness and reducing passions through meditation.
Conclusion
The article concludes that karmic bondage is primarily caused by the soul’s passions and delusions, not by actions alone. By recognising and controlling anger, pride, deceit and greed, and by cultivating right faith and conduct, one can minimise karmic influx and ultimately free the soul. Liberation results from self‑discipline and inner purification.
