Summary

The text discusses Kundakunda's principle of the independence of substances (vastu-svatantrya). Kundakunda's central inquiry concerns the nature of the soul (jiva): what it is, why it is bound in the cycle of existence, and how it can attain liberation. He posits that a substance is beautiful when it is separate from others and unified with itself; the state of bondage (bandha) between substances is the cause of disharmony. This bondage occurs specifically between the conscious jiva and the unconscious pudgala (matter). Bondage does not mean the substances become one or perform a single action; rather, it is a state where they occupy the same space and, by acting as mutual causes (nimitta-naimittika), influence each other's transformations. The root cause of bondage is the soul's state of ignorance (mithyatva), which leads to delusion, attachment, and aversion. Liberation is possible when the soul attains right faith and gradually breaks this chain of mutual causation. Kundakunda argues that one substance cannot be the agent (karta) of another substance's transformations. Each substance is inherently transformative (parinami) and is the agent of its own modifications. The relationship between substances is not one of agent-action but of mutual causality. For instance, when the soul experiences a passionate thought, it serves as the cause for nearby karmic matter to transform into a corresponding karmic bond. Conversely, when karmas fructify, they cause the soul to experience certain states. This is a parallel process where each substance transforms itself in response to the other, without one directly creating the other's state. The text clarifies that while from a conventional perspective (vyavahara naya) we say "the soul did karma," from a definitive perspective (nishchaya naya) the soul is only the agent of its own states, and karma is the agent of its own states. This principle of substance-independence leads to three conclusions: parallelism (samantaravada), orderly sequential transformation (k

Conclusion

Kundakunda's principle of substance-independence (vastu-svātantrya) has profound implications for understanding bondage and liberation. By establishing that each substance is the sole agent of its own modifications, with only a reciprocal instrumental (nimitta-naimittika) relationship between them, the theory resolves the apparent paradox of karmic bondage without compromising the purity of the soul. This leads to three key outcomes: parallelism (samāntaravāda), regulated sequential transformation (krama-niyamita-pariṇāmavāda), and naturalism (svabhāvavāda). The doctrine ultimately grounds a self-determinism where the soul, not external forces, governs its own destiny. This framework preserves moral responsibility while rejecting fatalism, offering a coherent path from delusion to liberation through right understanding of the independent nature of each reality.
